What is COMETS? COMETS is a scholarship program sponsored by the Engineering Technology Department at UNC Charlotte’s William States Lee College of Engineering and funded by the National Science Foundation. COMETS is an acronym for Career Opportunities for Meritorious Engineering Technology Scholars. Students must meet the following criteria:
Freshman Comets Freshmen will be recruited based on citizenship/residency status, SAT scores, high school ranking, high school GPA, letters of recommendation, scholarship application and written statement of purpose, financial need as assessed by the UNC Charlotte Student Financial Aid Office, and predicted grade index (PGI). The PGI is a combination of test scores and the high school grade average in selected academic courses, such as English, mathematics, sciences, foreign languages, and history, in which an adjustment is made to recognize participation in Honors, Advanced Placement (AP), and International Baccalaureate (IB) courses. *Freshman COMETS application* Transfer Comets Transfer Scholars will be recruited based on citizenship/residency status; transfer GPA, particularly performance in science, math, and engineering technology courses; standardized test scores; letters of recommendation; the scholarship application and written statement of purpose; and financial need as assessed by UNC Charlotte Student Financial Aid Office. Selection
In all cases, demonstrated financial need, past academic performance, appropriate coursework, and the quality of application materials will be considered by a team of evaluators. Each candidate will be ranked according to evaluation criteria and final selections will be based on the student’s potential to excel and the student’s ability to meet the COMETS program goals. Funding Awards will be based on financial need up to $5,000 per year with an average expected award of $2,750 per year. Awards are renewable for up to 4 years for Freshman COMETS and two years for Transfer COMETS provided students maintain full-time status and a minimum GPA of 2.8 each semester.
